Noelle - Day 101 (Female Genie, part 2)

So today I'm going to finish up the female genie tutorial, and its going to be a long post.  We've already drawn the genie, so now its time to color.  Enter: the twelve pack of Crayola pencils.  Click the link below to read on!  (No R.M.S. today, by the way, but there will be some tomorrow)



Alright, so supplies: a pencil (a 2B, 3B or a mechanical will work) and I wasn't joking when I said a twelve pack of Crayolas.  That's all you'll need.  Let's start, shall we?

Alright, so here's our drawing, all ready to be colored.  Too start get your sky blue pencil nice and sharp.  Let's continue.

To lay down a base coat, don't press too hard, and try to keep the colors smooth.  You're not going for color, remember, just tint.

Do all her skin before continuing - it just makes things easier.

Using the sky blue and regular blue, color lightly over the cheek bones and the bridge of the nose.  For very minute shading, use the sky blue to darken.

Use the blue on her eyebrows and ears as well.

Go ahead and color her neck and darken as you see fit, but don't go crazy.  We want the face to  be fairly light, since its the center of attention.

Take your violet (purple) and use that to outline and add a touch of shading to the hair.

While you have that out, trace over the lashes, eyes, and earnings.  Color the eyes with aqua green and don't add a pupil.  Trust me when I say it will look normal.

Finally, color the hair using your blue, and add some lines for shape.

So now you're done with the face and hair.  Now it's time to move on to the rest of the body.

To shade the body, use the same colors - blue and sky blue.  I made this genie fairly muscular, so I shaded around that to make it stand out.

Add shading where shading is due, but again, don't go crazy.

Sorry, it's sideways.  Please to that where the smoke over laps I didn't do any color.  Don't forget the shade under the bodice and on the belly, and that your light source is from above and behind.

Add just a touch of blue green over the highlights.

The skin is finished.  The next step?  The bodice, which we will be making into a lovely pink-red-purply color.

Sorry, it turned out sideways for some reason...

Take your red (make sure it's not mahogany, because they look similar...they're not) and outline the strip of fabric on the bodice.  Ignore the center piece and the gem for now.

Apply a bace coat in red.

Using the pink, color over the red base coat, ignoring the lines.  Add a highlight, but make it fairly faint. I kept one side undone so you can see the difference.

Finish  both sides.

Using your blue, color the bottem corners of the bodice, along with a section fanning out from the gem.

Color the centerpiece, but don't touch the gem.

Alright, for the gem.  Color the shading with blue green.

Use your lemon yellow to add onto that.

And then your normal yellow to complete the gem.

Use an orange and do a light scribble where the highlight should be.  It'll look nice I swear.

Tah dah!

Now, the tail and the final touches to your amazing female genie.

Out line the belt and the tail with violet (purple).

Add shading in purple, then add blue for volume.  Use the golden yellow for highlights (it'll look nice eventually.

Go a bit lighter on the belt, but use the same purple and blue for that.

So the tail is fairly simple, as you can see, but it balances off the wild genie hair up at the top of the drawing.  I actually made it so that it looks a bit like the lamp, but I doubt anybody noticed that.

Alright, you ready to continue?

The two metal bracelets are done the same as the gem.  Blue-green on the shadows...

Golden yellow over that...

And regular yellow over the rest.

Same as before - just add some orange.

Do the same with the other bracelet...

...and the hair band.

If you want to, you can use a white pencil to smooth out the metal.

Now, for the smoke/magicy stuff around her.  Use blue-green to add some shading.

A touch of yellow on the other half.

And then cover it all in sky blue.  Keep your hand loose and sketchy, but still keep the smoke's form.

Surround the smoke with sky blue...um...smoke.

Now for the lamp.  Use golden yellow for most of the upper half, be sure to keep the highlight open.

Add yellow over the rest and make a magic-y spiral around it.

Add some blue-green.  I don't know why, but all my photos of the next step vanished, so you're stuck winging it on the orange.  Just a tinge where the highlight is and add a single line to the magical spiral.

Time to add some magic sparks.  Put the majority of them on her left hand, as that's the 'closest' to the viewer.  Obviously, you're using blue green.

Add them else where, but keep them fairly sparce.

Loosen up the edges of the spark in the same color.

Surround with even looser golden-yellow.  Do this with all your sparks.

Take your light blue and add a fuzz all the way around her.  Don't get too close to the sparks and avoid the smoke - this is the background, so keep it in the back.
