Noelle - Day 10 (Cheap Organization)

It's alive!
Noelle is back!  And I've got a cool (and random) DIY project for people who have too much time on their hands.  It's not quite finished, but I'll be posting more photos on Monday (hopefully...)

So I was digging through our trash, which in our house is actually not weird cuz there actually is good stuff in our trash - like a million cardboard boxes, wood scraps, and old styrophone (white stuff used in packaging...how's it spelled?) hunks.  That's what I used for my project today!  Yes...you heard me right...we're painting styrofoam (that's how you spell it!  I'm a genius)

DIY Project: REEEEEAAAALLLY Cheap Organizer

Ok, so Supplies:

  • Frog tape (easy-to-remove tape...I dunno why they call it frog tape because have you ever tried to remove a frog...getting off subject...)
  • Paint of your choosing (I used a baby coral and a light green)
  • Paint brushes (I had five, but two were ruined ones used just for mixing paint)
  • Gesso and Modge Podge
  • The thing you're going to paint/up-cycle; in my case, a random hunk of styrofoam
Instructions (and photos!):
1.  So this is my inspiration: a chevron pattern up-cycled chair

2.  This is what I'm painting - a literal random hunk of styrofoam.  Sorry for the messy workspace, I paint on the floor in a corner of a garage and it gets kinda messy back there

3.  I had to mix red and hot pink acrylic with gesso to get the baby coral.  As you can see, most of my paint brushes are TRASHED (totally not my fault, it was my evil twin...um...Clara)

4.  I painted the first section...compartment...thingie.  Yeah.  It's kind of hard to get into there, especially since I made the mistake of painting the top first.  You can't see it since it's just gesso, but it's there and it's wet.  Be patient, I did it, you can do it too.

5.  There you go, I painted all six!  Ignoring all the project that are all around in the background, and notice I have to do some touch up on the top.  :(

6.  I decided to do a chevron pattern in green on one side, but I'm actually running low on green, so its SUPERwatered down and added to gesso.  I got it to work.  Anyway, to do a nice chevron pattern, use frog tape to cover the white spaces.  There are nice ways to do it, but I'm just kind of winging it.
7.  Finished chevron pattern!  It takes forever to get it right!
8.  Went ahead and painted it on, don't worry about being neat - that's what the frog tapes for.  Make sure to press it all down first though so that it doesn't leak.

9.  I painted the other three sides green so that the chevron stands out.  Cool, right?

So anyway, that's all you're getting till Monday.  I'm going on an RV trip (more tomorrow) and won't be able to paint at all.  :-)

Comment with your ideas for other DIYs and tips!  The big reveal will be on Monday, remember, as my 365 post.  That's all for now folks!  :)
