The Survivors (Part 12)

Nova shot like a bullet towards the frozen form of Jess, standing in the half-shadows at the end of the corridor.  He could see Astra and Iron Fist, ready to fight, and an exact likeness of himself hovering in mid air.  He twisted in midair and was about the slam into Jess’s back when he realized that Jess was flipping backwards into the air and -

Collided with a nasty scrunch on his back.  She grabbed him by the shirt collar and angled him towards the ground.  Despite his frantic efforts to slow down, he slammed into the ground and slid across the floor, Jess riding him like a surfer rides a wave.  Luckily, his face was protected by his helmet, so he could still watch as the battle played out.

Jess sprung off of him, making him slam into wall and wince.  He was going to be bruised all over soon.  In the meantime, Jess made use of her momentum and propelled herself forward, landed on Danny.  She bounced up right away, rocketing around.  Astra took a swing at her and soon found herself pinned to the ground, arm twisted behind her.  Iron Fist tried to take advantage of the situation and charged at Jess while she still had Astra pinned down, but Jess flung herself out of the way at the last moment, knocking Astra away from Danny’s punch.

Before anything else could happen though, Mozart began to sing.  Not the sort of song you could describe, but lilting notes and quavering lines of music.  It didn’t do anything to Nova, who was still huddled in the corner, but Mirage stopped looking like him and collapsed to the ground, Danny’s fists of iron flickered and went out, Astra seemed to be struggling against something invisible, and Jess?  Jess sank to the floor, her hands pressed around her ears, moaning and muttering.  Her face was screwed up in a pained, angry expression.

Mozart rolled on up to her, whispering, “The Disconnector.  Stops any natural powers.  Like yours.”

Jess looked up at her little brother and Nova was surprised to see her suddenly smiling again.  “Yep, but I can still work magic without my powers,” She murmured.

She sprung up and danced between Danny’s kicks right out through the gate.  Instantly, the lights came on, blinding everybody.  “Game over,” JARVIS said over the intercom.

“What?”  Nova said, confused, once his eyes had adjusted.  “But your whole team didn’t make it through!  I call unfair advantage!”

“Y’all teamed up,” Jess laughed.  “Every last one of you agreed to work together to stop me.  As in, you were all on the same team....which leaves me and only me on my team.  So...I won.  Haha.”

“Oh hahaha,” Mirage said, rubbing a sore head.  “I say cheats.”

Jess grinned.  “JARVIS?”

“Yes Clara?”

“Who won that battle?”

“I thought it was obvious Clara,” the British computer program said.  If computer programs could have nose, JARVIS would have had his in the air.  “Mozart, Mirage, Astra, Iron Fist, and Nova all teamed up against you.  Therefore, you were a one-man team and you won.”

“Thank you JARVIS.”

“Why does he call you Clara?”  Nova wondered aloud as they trooped upstairs.  “I mean, people call you Clara sometimes but your name is Jess, right?”

Jess stared at him for half-a-second before she said, “Sam, sometimes I wonder for your mental health,” and walked off.
