Spider-man in the MCU!
Heyyyyy people!
'Tis I, Clarissa, and I have been summoned from the depths of schoolwork and avoiding blog posts to greet you! Why, you ask?
........Noelle posted about Spider-man: Homecoming.
.....I freakin' love Spider-man: Homecoming.
And it hasn't even come out yet!
I completely share Noelle's enthusiasm for this movie. I hope she also realizes that this means it is inevitable that by posting about it, she has invoked my name, making me follow up on it with another post about a different aspect of Spider-man. Because that's how we fangirls roll.
If you haven't read Noelle's introduction to Spider-man: Homecoming, please make sure to first check out her post here: Spiderman: Homecoming (Prep Post) She does a great job getting you familiar with the character and history of Peter Parker.
Today, I'll be elaborating on a very common misconception concerning Spider-man: his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or "MCU."
The MCU is just a fancy name for the universe in which all these popular Marvel super-hero movies, such as the Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor series, are presented. "Being part of the MCU" means that, just like in Marvel's comics, a certain character is allowed to interact with other Marvel characters from different movie series together, but on the big screen. This is what makes Marvel movies so revolutionary! They are able to tie in multiple stand-alone series into one epic series.
Spider-man's role in the MCU is much more complicated than other popular Marvel super heroes. Let's dive into that, shall we?
Spider-man was a character created by Stan Lee, the founder of Marvel. Spidey's comic book copyrights definitely belong to Marvel, but his movie copyrights belonged to Sony from the beginning. Why? Because Spider-man is quite possibly the most favorite Marvel character of the world! That might be debatable for some people, but the point is that he was the first character Marvel wanted to put on the big screen. And at that point in Marvel's development, they didn't yet have their own movie-making company; so they handed the reigns over to Sony, whom they trusted would be more experienced and be able to market it better and all that.
However, now that Marvel has developed their own fantastic movie production team and company, they're missing the rights to their most famous character! They've been struggling for years now to make some sort of agreement with Sony (probably starting during the production of the Amazing Spiderman reproduction, starring Andrew Garfield) and fans have looked on anxiously.
What I'm getting to with all this rambling is.... MARVEL AND SONY FINALLY MADE AN AGREEMENT!
While Sony is still in control of Spider-man's cinematic copyright, their cooperation with Marvel producers and consent to participation with the MCU means a whole new world of possibilities for Spider-man. And that Marvel-Sony agreement is going to come fully into the light with the production of the new reboot, Spider-man: Homecoming. That's a huge reason why so many people were psyched to see Spidey in Captain America: Civil War; it was the first time Spider-man was allowed to be on-screen with other prominent Marvel characters.
So yay for Tom Holland! Welcome back, Spidey, to the cinematic Marvel family! I guess you could say.... Happy Homecoming.
But what's the misconception here, you might ask? Well, many casual movie-goers who don't understand the copyright history of cinematic Spider-man just see yet another new actor for Spider-man. So, they ask, why should they get excited about another one? Marvel has a solution for this, too!
Marvel recognizes that Spidey has a new chance at being in the Marvel universe, but his origin story has already been told. Twice. So they're going to portray a Peter Parker who's already accepted the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" theme, and you can see in Civil War that he has applied that to his life already.
Therefore, the new reboot of Spider-man is definitely going to explore more of his life as a teenager in high school, maturing more and becoming part of the big wide world, instead of him learning a bunch more about his "new" powers. Marvel's attempting to make Peter a more relatable character (their actors this time around aren't young-looking adults; they're actually much younger)!
And because of his newfound ability to interact with other MCU characters, he can be influenced by the Avengers. As more teaser trailers are released, the Marvel fanbase grows more excited to see that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing a significant role in the movie as Tony Stark. (This follows up Civil War perfectly! Spider-man is no longer a lonely hero, untouched by the Marvel world. Hopefully we'll get to see more internal struggle between Captain America and Tony Stark through Peter Parker!)
Furthermore, Marvel is making Homecoming an even more different, appealing movie by taking a look at some of the alternate characters the comics have presented, and making Peter's close friends be a couple new characters. So that boy you saw in the trailer holding a Death Star made of LEGOs is one of these newer friends, Ned Leeds; he's not Harry Osborn.
However, Harry might still play a role in upcoming Spider-man movies after Homecoming, because there have been glimpses of actor Harrison Osterfield being... "discretely" involved in the Spider-man development and Comic Cons.
(It's hilarious that Tom and Harrison were already close friends before the production of these movie. I would love it if Tom's bestie Harry played Peter's bestie, ...also Harry. Just more proof that the actors are actually the fiction, and the characters are real. :P Lol, but that's to discuss another day.)
So there you have it! After a long journey from comics to Sony to Marvel, Spider-man is finally equipped with all the opportunities a moving screen and epic production company like Marvel have to offer! Not only that, but the cast of actors is a fantastic match to the personalities portrayed in previous comics and cartoon shows. I hope that when Spider-man: Homecoming is released in theaters on July 7th, you'll enjoy watching with me!
P.S. (Because I realized that Noelle often does a P.S. and now I want one too.) It looks like this type of blog will hopefully be a more regular thing for Noelle and I!
We've got an epic collab post coming up....... can you guess which super hero it'll be on?
Comment below which Marvel characters we should do in the future!
